FAQ

How many lessons do I need to learn how to skate?

We believe that you will know how to ride a skateboard after your first lesson! But like any sport it takes years of practice and determination to become really confident. Generally 3-5 lessons are a great start for beginners to learn the basics. We recommend continual practice and follow up lessons for all levels.

Is 5 too young to start at Kman Skate School?

Some of our most confident skateboarders are 5. The sooner you start to learn something, the easier it will be. Plus if you learn how to do it right from a young age, you will develop the principals to skate safely and look after yourself in any skate park.

How do the lessons work?

Students are fully padded (knee, elbow and wrist pads plus skate helmet) They are then explained the skate park rules and edicate of skating safely, know your goals
and limitations, progression steps to achieve the tricks you dream of doing and getting the lingo down packed.

  • Beginners learn about the components of a skateboard. They are then shown the fundamentals of how to stand on a board, how to push, turn and stop.
  • Intermediate-advanced students are assessed by a coach to determine their skill level. The instructor will work with them on specific tricks and techniques.

I’m not very coordinated - will I be able to skate?

YES! Our coaches understand that the first lesson is not easy for everyone and it takes time until you feel comfortable rolling on a piece of wood with 4 wheels! Skateboarding boosts coordination and balance and our coaches will assist you with developing your confidence in these areas.

Do I need to hang around the skate park while my kid has a lesson?

We request that parents of 5-6 year old students stay nearby while the lesson is in progress. For older kids, we don’t mind if you wonder off or even leave the park as long as you are contactable on your mobile phone. Coaches ensure that students remain in or nearby the skate area for pick up.

Is it for girls too?

ABSOLUTELY!

Can I bring my own skateboard?

Yes you can use your own board and safety gear. Although some skateboards and pads/helmets may not meet our safety requirements. If your gear is unsuitable for the lesson we will recommend that you use ours.

Does skateboarding help with surfing, snowboarding and wakeboarding?

YES! There is great a synergy between these sports as they use similar muscles and movements. We even have boards, like our Carveboards (link to Carveboard Lessons), which are specifically designed for “cross-training” in these sports.

Have you had any major accidents?

NO! Our coaches teach with a method that minimises risk. We teach our students to skate safely and respect the rules of a skate park. The most common incidents are sore bums and bruised egos!

What if it rains?

As we operate outside, rained out lessons are rescheduled to the next available time.

Testimonials

I recently took my son and five of his friends to Kman Skate School for lessons. They had a great time and learnt so much!
The Kman teachers where really encouraging and all of the kids thought they where "cool". Their professionalism and focus on
educating the children around safety issues was very impressive. All of the kids will be regular users of the service.

MARCELLE JORDAN

I just wanted to drop you a line to say how much fun the boys had. Ryan even told the guy at the airport - the one who has to check whether you're carrying weapons etc. all about his lesson. He held up the whole queue!    Anyway, thanks for providing a great thing for kids. The boys have spent a lot of time practising their 'ollies ' and other moves.

Vacation Care

Our children really enjoyed the skateboarding workshop which we attended in the January Holidays .The children would like us to program another excursion later in the year because they enjoyed themselves so much. The children were well equipped with safety gear and had enough equipment and staff so that all of the 24 children could participate at once - I think the hour and a half suited our group perfectly. Thank you for a great day out.

ANDREA AND SUSAN - ROZELLE VACATION CARE

I’ve taken two groups of children to Kman Skate School and they have both had a brilliant day. They had fun and a laugh, and also found skills and bravery that they never realised they had. A big thank you to the staff of Kman who are calm, patient and wonderful teachers. You made what was a scary experience for some children a lot of fun.

TRACY CLIFTON – GIRLS & BOYS BRIGADE, REDFERN

Organising the workshop was made very easy as the staff were professional and friendly.

The staff had good rapport with the kids and were able to establish their skill levels and build the confidence of each child.

Big Kids

It's amazing how much fear you have as an adult. I was so afraid I'd fall off the skateboard and end up with scrapes, but once I got into to it and started to let go of some of that fear I had the most amazing time! My image of skateboarding has forever changed - it is not just for kids or “tear away” boys - it is a wonderful release and challenge for adults and a great experience to share with friends. Without a doubt, this experience will leave you with a sense of thrill and fun and turn you into a skateboarding enthusiast instantly. Thank you for a fantastic afternoon!

SARAH RUPLEY – PLEASURE RELATIONS MANAGER, RED BALLOON SYDNEY

The organisation you have created with the skate school is one of the most positive actions that I experienced within the skate world so far.

PETER VAN WINKLE – DIRECTOR, RHINO RAMPS, BELGIUM

Thank you so much for being friendly and teaching me some skateboarding! Last week I went to northern part of Finland, great place for skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding. Snowboarding felt easier than last time and I think that it’s because I learned some new things during the skateboard lesson.
